Here's what coaching is - and isn't

I get asked this all the time: "What actually is coaching?"

It sounds simple, but it’s often covered in a bit of mystery. We tend to think coaching is only for athletes or high-flying business execs - but of course, it’s not.

I want to debunk these myths (!) and boil coaching down to its fundamentals.

It's a process that EVERYONE can benefit from - especially during the 'messy' years of our 20s!

Since these are the years we're figuring all of the big life questions out - like our life path, career, identity, location... etc! Lumped with a mix of digital overwhelm, more choices than ever and the classic uncertainty of these times. Ie, not the things we're taught about how to navigate in school.

So, if you’ve ever wondered what a coach actually does or how the process works, here is everything you need to know.

#1 - It’s Not About "Fixing" You.

The biggest misconception about coaching is that you only need it when something is "broken."

Let’s be clear: coaching isn’t therapy, and it isn’t a "quick fix" for a crisis. While therapy often looks backward to heal past wounds, coaching looks forward to the life that you WANT, so we can help you get there.

We don't start from a place of lack.

We start from the belief that you are already capable, but you might just be standing in your own way. Coaching isn't about fixing a flaw; it's about unlocking a new level of potential.

#2 - It’s a Mirror for Your Mind.

Coaching isn’t only about solving a specific problem, it’s about seeing new possibilities where you once saw limits.

Think of a coach as a mirror held up at an angle you’ve never seen before. Through reflective, non-judgmental conversations, coaching helps you:

  • Understand your own patterns and "blind spots."

  • Identify the internal hurdles getting in your way.

  • Gain total clarity on what you actually want (not what you think you should want).

It’s a space designed entirely for your growth, focusing on the future rather than dwelling on the past.

#3 - You Are the Driver.

In practical terms, coaching provides the framework, but you provide the power.

The goal is to provide you with the tools and the action-oriented planning to get you from where you are to where you want to be.

  • The Coach: Guides, reflects, and challenges.

  • You: Take the actions, make the decisions, and own the results.

We provide the map and the compass, but you’re the one who gets yourself there. It’s an empowering process that ultimately results in you "launching" your life with a brand-new toolkit.

Are You Ready for Coaching?

You don't need to have a massive "life crisis" to start. Sure, if you've been impacted by a specific event or something that's happened in your life, coaching can help you tackle that. But often, the best time to start is when you feel that low-level hum of "stuckness" or uncertainty, before things get to a starker stage.

You might be ready if:

  • You’ve been dwelling on the same challenge for months

  • You feel "Sunday dread" when thinking about your working week

  • You know you want to change, but you don't know where to start

  • You’re scared of leaving your comfort zone, even though you’re unhappy

  • You constantly compare your "behind-the-scenes" to everyone else's "highlight reel."

  • You’re procrastinating on the big decisions that matter

  • You're not sure where you want to go next (literally or metaphorically)

In Conclusion

Coaching is simply a way to stop "drifting" and start "driving."

It’s about moving from a place of uncertainty to a place of action. You already have the strengths and the talent - coaching just helps you clear the path so you can finally use them.

If any of those "readiness signs" felt a little too relatable, let’s have a chat.
